Our process was developed in the field, on complex job sites that required coordination with multiple utility companies, the one call system, the project planners, and the personnel breaking dirt.  We provide much more than paint on the ground and flags to mark known utilities.  If you want a locating company to come and spray paint the ground and go on to the next job, we are not your company.  If you want a partner from project start to finish, who will provide maps of all known utilities in any given area, will confirm the utility markings from the one-call system and correct their errors, will make connections with local personnel in all known local utility companies with lines underground, will ensure all local and state regulations are followed prior to digging to protect your company should there be a utility strike, and will be available for the duration of your project, Texas Locating is your company.

How do we actually save you money?  The benefits of having a comprehensive picture of existing utilities prior to any large construction project are clear and well documented in the literature.  The field as whole is termed subsurface utility engineering and has only been a recognized part of construction since the 1990’s.  It’s an additional cost that companies must pay upfront, but the benefits have consistently proven to outweigh these costs.  There have been several large multi-state studies on the cost-benefit relationship on using utility companies to provide accurate utility information prior to project start and throughout the project duration.  The landmark study came out of Purdue University in 1999.  It looked at 71 projects over a 4 state area and determined that for every $1 spent on obtaining accurate and comprehensive utility information upfront, the project saved $4.62 over the life of the project.  After working in this field for some time, the benefits to the payor are clear, and we have numerous case studies to prove it.

Texas Locating, LLC’ Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) support services provide professionals in the A/E/C industry with up to date mapping information of the existing underground utility infrastructures. SUE has a wide application and can be used for building construction, highways, railroads, transit, military, sanitation, and private and public works applications. Our services will add quality and accountability to any project.

RECORDS RESEARCH Investigation starts with records research. This process depends on project scope and level of service requested (SUE QUALITY LEVELs). A majority of SUE providers use information provided by their clients as well as one-call services to initially identify underground utilities and owners. After utility owner preliminary information is collected, Texas Locating coordinates and effectively communicates utility data with project members.

Most utility records are insufficient tools for proper SUE deliverables due to incomplete records from historical changes. Texas Utility Locating will confirm known, identify abandoned, and locate unknown underground facilities to eliminate risk.

UTILITY DESIGNATION After preliminary record research is concluded, Texas Locating field staff will proceed with a utility sweep of the facility and start the designation process.

Our locating crew will use existing records and confirm, identify unknowns, and mark utilities. To avoid errors, Texas Locating field staff uses multiple locators of different frequencies and configurations from different manufacturers to improve accuracy in utility detection.

UTILITY LOCATION USING TEST HOLES- UTILITY POTHOLING In certain situations (pinpoint non-conductable underground utilities, confirm location of utilities in close proximity to proposed excavation, congested areas with mutliple crossing underground utilities), Texas Locating recommends that vertical QLA data should be taken through direct rod readings on exposed utilities instead of deriving the data from surface elevation data. After field staff identifies underground utilities, Texas Locating’s vacuum excavation services expose critical underground utilities by using air/vacuum excavation methods to directly visualize and record utility data.
